Business web page layout primer:

OR: Lots of ideas but where do I start?

A company's website is one of its most important assets. If a customer comes to your website and it looks like you didn't put a lot of time into making it attractive, they may leave the site. Even more important, however, is a website's functionality; if your website is beautiful but customers are unable to find what they're looking for, you can be sure that they will leave. We all have stories about going to a website only to be frustrated trying to find what we are looking for. So if your website is not designed correctly your customers will simply leave and go else where. So here are some pointer for business website design. 1) Don't give visitors too many options. Keep the homepage simple and beautiful so your audience can easily find what they're looking for, all while being guided by captivating images. 2) Think through the most logical categorization of the items in your navigation, and utilize drop- down menus to sort those items so visitors don't struggle to find what they need. Take your time on this area. The success of your website depends on the customer logically and quickly finding what they are looking for. 3) Use visual elements to tell a story about your company that helps visitors understand the experience of working with your product or service. The images should be pertinent and not overwhelming. 4) Don't skimp on the detail on your product pages. If you're selling a product, explain every feature of that product and what they do, using both text and graphic elements to do so. 5) The most important of all. Keep it simple. If you only need a few options to explain your company's function or direct site visitors to take a certain action, don't overload the website. Business website keywords : Search engine usage and how “they” find you.  or “love them or hate them but you got to use them”   Computer search engines see ONLY text. That information alone can help when designing a website. If your site is highly graphical but has very little text content you can impress the humans but the computer search engines will consider your site of little interest. Remembering that can save you months of frustration, wondering why no one is checking out your site. When crafting the text for your website you need to research what words are the most common for searches in your business.  One way of searching these words out is simply checking out your competition, seeing what words they use in their title.  Another method is checking out the search engine “suggestions” - they usually contain the most common search words and terms. You can also try using the Google Keyword Planner. This is an excellent tool, just check out the suggested bid price and the “competition” column. It gives a  great bird’s eye view of what you should shoot for. After you have determined what people are searching  for, then you can make an informed decision of which keywords to use in your web page title,  and throughout the main texts of your website. Since you only have about 60 characters in your page title,  using a strong keyword in your title is better than using it in the description tag.   Carefully plan to use one or more relevant keywords in your title, and several times on each page  in the main text of the website. If you can use more than one keyword in the title while accurately  describing the content of your article, then do it. However, don’t go overboard with using numerous top keywords in every location of your article. You want to optimize your article in a tasteful way without compromising the relevance and quality of your writing. You need to find the right balance between satisfying the search engines and not boring your human viewers. This is the art of search engine optimization.

Bandwidth Is a term used to refer to various bit-rate measures, representing the available or consumed data communication resources expressed in bits per second or multiples of it. That is a fancy way of saying “only so much water can flow through a pipe”. Therefore the more graphic and media on the website, the slower the download time. On a laptop this may not be significant but on a smart phone this can be much longer, sometimes too long. Remember in this case, the amount of information is not limited by the actual device but on HOW they get that information (i.e. wireless)

Why is my page just sitting there on Google

(and other engines) and not moving up in the ranks?:

Or Search Engine Optimization: understanding the ways of “the search”. What are the search engines looking for? Like any business Search Engine companies want to make money. A satisfied customer comes back and buys again, that’s basic marketing. So how does this work for Search Engines? An easy analogy is shopping for groceries. If you go to a super market and the product you are looking for is not stocked or hard to find, you are less likely to come back. However, if you can find what you are looking for quickly and efficiently you are more likely to walk away satisfied. That philosophy is the same for any business including Search Engines.  Google, Yahoo and all the others want you as a consumer of internet information to be satisfied with your results. So if your page is not moving up in the rank you need to ask yourself the question. Would I go to my own site? Is it REALLY interesting? Here is what Google says about its optimization strategy. “Provide high-quality content on your pages, especially your homepage. This is the single most important thing to do. If your pages contain useful information, their content will attract many visitors and entice webmasters to link to your site. In creating a helpful, information-rich site, write pages that clearly and accurately describe your topic. Think about the words users would type to find your pages and include those words on your site.” One word of warning - people like me that help you with Search Engine Optimization CANNOT guarantee placement. What we can do is position your site to be both search engines and consumer friendly. We help your website became the best reflection of you and your business. However, there are web designers who claim to be able to “get you to page 1 on Google”. Here is what Google has to say: “Some companies claim to "guarantee" high ranking for your site in Google's search results. While legitimate consulting firms can improve your site's flow and content, others employ deceptive tactics in an attempt to fool search engines” There are no short cuts, and especially as the internet becomes bigger and more complex. It all comes back to tried and true marketing principles, For long term success, give customers good service and good products and they will come back for more.

Where oh where have my customers gone:

Or “Do you have the right focus on your

website?”

One of the main reasons I have found for a lack of interest in a website is poor marketing focus. As an example of this I will tell you a true story. I have a friend who wanted to buy some software from a major on-line business. She went to their very impressive website to see what version and what features she needed for her new start up business. She made her choice and then spent the next 20 minutes trying to find out where on this site was the “BUY ME” button. Now most of us would have stopped WAY before that and simply gone to another site. However my friend is very determined and contacted the IT department, asking them “How do I buy your product?” The tech walked her through the menus to the bottom corner of one of the pages, and there it was is small print the words “purchase product”.   Wow, I admire my friends tenacity but how many of your customers would really spend that long in a search for something that should be obvious. The fact of the matter is, if you have a business, your website should be designed for one purpose - to sell something. If you have a brick and mortar business you also want to have your address and phone number very prominent - as many people use their phones as a phone book, to look up your address and phone number. According to Televox “94 percent of smartphone owners look for local information on their phone” and “When searchers seek local information, 70 percent connect with the business”. So when you are looking at your website or are considering getting someone to custom design your website, ask your self these questions. “If I was looking to buy this product, could I do so easily? “If I wanted to visit/call this business - can I do so from my smart phone conveniently? Don’t let your web-page/website fall into the highly artistic but useless category - make your website work for you.
